In 2018, the United Nations, prompted by the initiative of sociologist Leszek Sibilski, established June 3rd as World Bicycle Day.
World Bicycle Day encourages stakeholders to emphasize and advance the use of the bicycle as a means of fostering sustainable development, strengthening education, including physical education, for children and young people, promoting health, preventing disease, promoting tolerance, mutual understanding and respect and facilitating social inclusion and a culture of peace.
Since 2011, Ehime Prefecture has been making various efforts to promote and develop a culture of cycling that fosters health, purpose in life, and friendship through bicycles, with safe bicycle use as one our key initiatives. This is in accordance with the principles of World Bicycle Day.
Cycling has become important not only in improving the quality of life for everyone in Ehime, but also in contributing to regional revitalization by attracting visitors to the area. Embracing World Bicycle Day makes sense with the global increase in bicycle use and will allow us to further contribute to fostering a culture of cycling.
Ehime endorses World Bicycle Day on June 3rd, and proclaims our support to further promote a culture of cycling.
