Ehime Prefecture is “the Gateway to Shikoku” with its international regular cargo routes and flights that connect Matsuyama with Eastern Asian destinations such as Shanghai and Seoul.
Ehime Prefecture has 54 harbors, six of which are designated as key harbors. Three harbors, in particular, Matsuyama Port, Imabari Port, Mishima-kawanoe Port, have been opened up to international regular freight routes.
The total quantity of container cargo handled has significantly increased from none for 1990 to 108,878 TEU in 2006. At Matsuyama Port and Mishima-Kawanoe Port, multipurpose international terminal wharves have been established, which are equipped with 40,000 to 50,000t-class berths at the outer port. An increase in freight volume is expected for the future.

Located only 15 minutes by car from the city center, Matsuyama Airport was the first airport in the Shikoku/Chugoku region to initiate jet service.
Today, it is an important regional airport that has scheduled domestic flights that connect it with 6 other airports in Japan.
It is also becoming a hub in a domestic/international transportation network by, for example, offering international flights to Seoul and Shanghai.

As part of the development of the transportation system, all four of Shikoku's prefectural capital cities and Honshu Island were connected by the now completely opened Setouchi Shimanami Kaido Expressway.
The expressway is to be extended to the Nanyo area. In the future, a circulatory expressway system in the shape of a figure 8 is planned. This system will enhance the convenience of transportation on Shikoku Island.
