routeA  By ferry from Hojo to Kashima

The famous boat with a deer on it

Kashima is about 400 m from Hojo port. It looks close enough to swim, but you get across by the regular ferry. The model deer on top of the boat is a somehow pleasing sight. Enjoy the short trip by sitting outside and catching the salt air.

Things to see

From spring to autumn, the boat leaves every 20 minutes, and so there’s no need to worry about the time. The port has a car park, making Kashima an attractively easy place to visit from Matsuyama.

routeB Kashima Shrine

Visit the god of Kashima before climbing the mountain

There’s a torii gate in front of Hojo port, and the inner sanctuary Kashima Shrine across the water. It’s not known exactly when it was built, but it’s said that Empress Jingu visited here when she set out for the Korean peninsula, and prayed for victory and a safe journey. The sight of the stately building beyond the pines expresses the strong faith of the samurai who worshipped at the shrine.

Things to see

The shrine has a deep relationship with the history of the region. In the Edo period, the Matsudaira family of the Matsuyama Domain visited the shrine, and the oar dance performed at the spring and autumn festival is said to have originated as a dance of the Suigun navy of the Kono clan which controlled the area in the Middle Ages. For the people of the area, the shrine is a protective presence.

routeC  Kashima forest (Mountain trail)

About 20 minutes to the top of the mountain. Just the right distance to feel refreshed

Set off aiming for the top at 113.8 m. The mountain path is designated as one of Ehime’s 88 best forest walks. The dappled light through the trees and the ferns are relaxing to look at, and you can encounter wild deer. Standing on the summit observation platform, the cool breeze on your damp forehead feels good, and there’s a panoramic view of the sea and the town. In a corner of the summit is a rock called Onodachi no Iwao from which Empress Jingu is supposed to have fired an arrow into the sea.

Things to see

You can enjoy identifying the islands from the circular map, as well as the amazing view of the distance islands and the mountains that extend behind the town of Hojo. There are several routes down, and if you take a different path down, you increase your chances of meeting deer. The path can be slippery depending on the weather and the season, so that in case, it’s best to use the main path.
