Trade volume of Ehime Prefecture

Ehime Prefecture has worked hand-in-hand with the private sector to strengthen international competitiveness for companies based in the prefecture.
The prefectural government has started a pioneering movement to support diversifying international business, such as sending missions overseas for economic exchange and foreign local trade shows, holding international exhibitions and business meetings, initiating opportunities for overseas transactions, and supporting companies to attend trade shows overseas.

Our major partner countries are Panama, China, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and South Korea.
Our major items of export are boats and ships, and non-ferrous metals.
Our major items of import are metallic ore and waste, and petroleum.

With China, in particular our economic exchange has become increasingly important for the Ehime's economy. We have regular cargo and airline routes between Matsuyama and Shanghai. As well, 92 companies from the prefecture have established a total of 147 bases in China.

In Shikoku, Ehime Prefecture accounts for more than 60% of the total trade, which makes Ehime "the center of trade in Shikoku".

As the world market gets more integrated, companies based in Ehime Prefecture have also looked overseas to increase their business.

As of December 2010, companies based in Ehime have expanded their business in 30 countries, and created 291 bases (117 companies). A regional break down shows that over 80% are in Asia. China accounts for approximaTely 50% of this overseas business, with manufacturing accounting for 70%, and production accounting for about 50%.

Until recently, the usual motive for moving to China, called "the factory of the world", was to lower production costs. However in recent years, an increasing number of companies consider China to be "the market of the world" and have set up sales or information offices.
