1Kaneko Yamauchi's Island Cookery Class (Gogoshima Island)

Try your hand at preparing food and desserts with Gogoshima's delicious iyokan oranges.

This class got started with the purpose of introducing Gogoshima's wonderful iyokan to the world. You can try making iyokan mochi, cakes, chirashi sushi, jelly and so on. Chirashi sushi containing iyokan beer is only available here, and you can also take it away with you. Requests are also accepted for learning how to make local specialties, or for cooking using specific ingredients. You're free to ask in advance about ingredients, amounts and so on.

Highlight

Many people take their families and eat what they make for lunch. You can also make enough to take home with you afterwards. Yamauchi-san is very friendly and amenable.

2Yurakko Pizza Factory (Gogoshima Island)

Why not try making pizza using island ingredients and a mobile pizza oven by the sea? (Other options include making mandarin orange juice or seaweed jelly, and digging up sweet potato. Please ask about pricing. )

It only takes a few minutes to cook the pizza in the brick oven, and you can enjoy freshly cooked pizza in a fantastic location overlooking the sea. The pizza base and oven are ready-prepared, so all you need to do is roll out the dough, add sauce (basil or miso) and add about 16 types of topping including local vegetables, seafood and cheese. Miso sauce goes particularly well with fish and is popular with adults.

Highlight

Yurakko Pizza Factory is run by local farm wives. Their friendly conversation makes pizza-making so much more enjoyable. Besides octopus and shrimp, shellfish, hijiki, mochi, goya and the like are popular toppings, and the great flavours attract many repeat visitors, both adults and children.

3Make a pizza lunch at Funakoshi, Gogoshima's belly button (Gogoshima Island)

Enjoy the freshly-cooked taste and homely atmosphere of Gogoshima.

The pizza is ready in a flash in the brick oven in a garden overlooking the sea of Funakoshi. Roll out the dough provided, and add sauce and toppings. The pizza is cooked quickly with a strong flame, and everyone gets full on their own handiwork. You can also walk to Washigasu beach and enjoy swimming in the sea.

Highlight

This program was planned for families, and small children are welcome. Choose from toppings including salami, green pepper, sausage, onion, egg plant, broccoli, and corn. Everything is easy to do, so you can just enjoy the fresh air of the island and have fun.

4Island seafood cooking and experience the sea (Muzukijima Island)

Eat your fill of seafood prepared by a fisherman. Various sea-based programs are also available.

Two fishermen started the restaurant with the aim of introducing seasonal food not found in shops, and there are many repeat visitors from Ehime. Enjoy the deliciousness of the freshly caught fish, thanks to the judgment of the fisherman and the skill of the chef. You can experience the seafood gastronomy of the islands.

Highlight

The menu includes grilled turban shells, sashimi, stewed fish, fried fish, and other seafood. In summer, the sashimi includes righteye flounder, sea perch and greenling, and from autumn to winter, amberjack, yellowtail, scad and flounder. The best fish is offered according to the season. Sea bream rice is also served.

5Ikina Muzuki Pizza Making (Muzukijima Island)

You can make an authentic pizza, from rolling the dough to arranging the topping and cooking it.

At Kaiyuutei run by a fisherman on Muzukijima Island you can make pizza in an authentic brick oven with the help of the female staff.

Highlight

Choose from one of two original sauces, and top the pizza with lots of fresh seafood caught by the owner of Kaiyuutei. The hot crispy pizza cooked in a proper oven is just perfect!

6Make Seaweed Jelly and Seafood Rice with Fishermen (Nogutsunajima Island)

Sunday lunch in Nogutsuna island

Select octopus, turban shells, hijiki and other ingredients provided by the fisherman to create your own luxurious seafood rice that you can't experience anywhere else. Using precooked ingredients, you cook the food with Tachibana-san. Enjoy the soup and stewed fish provided with your own creations, while gazing out over the sea.

Things to do with your family enjoying the flavours of tranquil Nogutsunajima Island. Islanders show you how to make the seaweed jelly typically made on the island using agar-agar. You can eat ready-made jelly with your meal, and take what you make home with you as a souvenir. Enjoy the different textures. You can also buy a seaweed jelly steamer.

9Nishi no Ya guesthouse jam making (Futagamijima Island)

Try your hand at making jam using natural ingredients from Futagamijima.

Nishi no Ya is very close to Futagami port. You can make jam in all four seasons using local fruit including citrus, plum, biwa, grapes and strawberry. In the Chinese citron season, you can try picking the fruit to experience the laid-back lifestyle of the island.

Highlight

Fujita-san likes making things by hand. Her jam has a traditional flavour and it's sold not only in Ehime but also in the Kanto region. Grape and strawberry take about 30 minutes to prepare, while marmalade takes about an hour and a half. After learning how to make jam, it's nice to take a walk around historic Futagami.
