This island, measuring about 1.5 kilometers around and about 114 meters above the sea, is located inside the Seto Inland Sea National Park. It takes about three minutes to get there from the Hojo harbor by boat. Many deer inhabit this island, giving the island its named. There is a trail going around the island (parts are closed off due to fallen rocks) and the observation deck at the top of the hill offers a bird's-eye view of the Seto Inland Sea.

Highlight

Every year on the third and the fourth days of May, the island holds the Hojokashima Festival, where locals perform "Kaineri Dance*", the intangible ethnic cultural heritage designated by Ehime Prefecture. Also, every October, the autumn tradition of the deer antler-cutting ceremony is held. The surrounding area is known as a fishing ground for sea breams, and is visited by many fishermen. The beaches and camping sites on the island are wonderful for outdoor recreation, especially in the summer.
* A war dance of the Kono Suigun Navy, performed on a boat to pray for or to celebrate victory in a battle, dedicated for the god of the shrine in origin.
